ABOUT

Kristen L. Miller

Hello! My name is Kristen L. Miller (she/her) and I am a PhD Candidate in Sociology at the City University of New York (CUNY), Graduate Center.

My research is focused on social movements, Black studies, culture and aesthetics, performance theory and everyday embodied practices.

I am particularly interested in the ways that Black, and other racialized communities, use cultural practices to imagine, feel, and enact freedom. For my dissertation, I am conducting a multi-sited ethnography of Black biking subcultures in the United States and South Africa.

I also work as an Adjunct Professor at Hunter College and have taught courses on Social Movements & Social Change as well as Sex & Gender. Prior to attending graduate school, I worked as an organizer for many years within the Movement For Black Lives.

When I’m not working, I like to dance and ride my bike around New York City.
