Freedom and Collective Movement in Black Biking Subcultures

Currently I am working on my dissertation which consists of a multi-sited ethnography of Black biking subcultures in the United States and South Africa.

This project examines events commonly known as “rideouts,” where large groups of mostly young men on bicycles, dirt bikes, and ATV’s pop wheelies, and perform other tricks, as they deftly navigate, and often take over, their city streets.

My dissertation has been funded by the Fulbright Research Award and CUNY’s Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies Doctoral Fellowship.

Minoritarian Performance Art in New York City

This project examines the subjective, embodied, and affective experiences of artists who engage in political performance art. Drawing on interviews with members of two contemporary performance collectives in New York City, I show how minoritized artists use performance as a form of embodied politics to challenge and transform systems of oppression.
